Message from CNO/Senior VP Patient Care Services

Dear Colleagues,
It is a privilege to serve as the Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer at Georgia Health Sciences Medical Center. Committed to clinical practice, each day I witness in many different ways the unique caring, compassion, dedication, energy, and enthusiasm offered to our patients and their families by our nursing staff.
As the Senior Vice President for Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer, I am committed to providing leadership to assure that high-tech, high-touch, quality, and safe care is provided to our patients and their families. I am equally committed to creating and maintaining an environment that supports our nurses. With many changes in our organization, we have transitioned to a culture of shared governance. Our nurses are involved in decision making from the unit level to the organizational level. My role is to assure that a professional practice environment is maintained where evidence based nursing practice is utilized, professional development is encouraged, and nurses are empowered to make decisions that affect their practice.
Georgian Regents University nurses can build their careers, advance their education, and master different areas of clinical competence. Unit educators have developed Pathways to Expertise in a number of areas such as ED Nursing, Critical Care Nursing, and Perinatal Nursing which provides a blueprint for orientation and professional development over a five year period.
We also provide unit-based education, online continuing education access, education to promote professional development, and certification. Nurses who are certified in the area of clinical expertise in which they work receive a differential in their pay.
I am so proud of the nurses at Georgia Regents University and honored to lead this group of inspired professionals. As we continue on our journey of excellence, I ask that you recall that one patient/family, that one moment when you knew that all you ever wanted to be was a nurse. You are truly an exceptional nursing team and I recognize the tremendous value each of you brings to not only our organization, but also to the community we serve.
Warmest Regards,
Sandra I. McVicker, MSN, RN SVP PCS/ CNO
