Collection Guidelines

Specimen must arrive at Mayo Medical Laboratory Rochester within 48 hours of collection. Ordering physician name and phone number are required. Collect specimens Monday-Thursday ONLY and not the day before an observed holiday (ie July 4, Christmas, New Year's, etc)

Limitations and Contraindications

Abstinence from alcohol for at least 24 hours prior to specimen collection is essential as ethanol suppresses ALA-D activity.

Interpretation

In patients with ADP, erythrocyte ALA-D activity is typically reduced by 80% or more from normal levels.
