Limitations and Contraindications
Any condition that can result in partial or complete adrenal or gonadal failure may result in low levels, diminishing the diagnostic usefulness of the test.
Elevated androstenedione levels indicate increased adrenal or gonadal androgen production. Most androgen-secreting gonadal tumors also overproduce androstenedione, but often to lesser degrees than adrenal tumors.
