Specimen Requirements

Fresh feces, duodenal aspirate

Ambient temperature and transport to Microbiology Laboratory within 15 minutes.

Critical Values

Phone report of amoebae presence.

Causes for Rejection

Use of non-sterile container; delay in transport > 15 minutes; dried specimen received on slide; improper labeling.

Collection Guidelines

FECES Pass directly into clean dry container. Do not contaminate with urine. Select portions containing pus, blood, or mucus. Submit a second specimen on a separate day to increase probability of isolation of pathogen.

No amoebae seen

Limitations and Contraindications

Examination is highly dependent upon specimen quality and transport.

Interpretation

 

Additional Information

For suspected amoebic infections with negative wet mount examination, consider submitting additional specimen in Ecofix fixative for ova and parasite examination.
